The Hurt Locker - Mise En Scene

"The Hurt Locker" is a film set in the war ridden Middle-East and follows an army unit which seem to specialise in bomb disposal. Lots of Mise-En-Scene is used to create a sense of realism in this picture. The location certainly seems authentic which really sells the idea of them being in the situation that they have found themselves in. A genuine-looking bomb disposal suit is used to give even more realism to the film, and all of the other characters are either dressed in an army uniform, or as a Middle-Eastern citizen. Real army vehicles are used which makes the whole scene seem as real as it possibly could do. Realistic looking guns are also carried by all of the army troops, because that it was would happen in real life. All of these props make for a very realistic film.

  1. Grade C
The examiner will look for more evidence of specific detail, so as well as writing that the mise-en-scene and costume are Middle Eastern, give 3 details about each (the dusty roads, low whitewashed buildings, flat roofs, arched doorways, sandbags, minaret, evidence of war damage, women in hijabs and so on).
You do better in your second example where you refer to army vehicles and guns, but could be more specific about 'uniform' by observing the padded bomb detonation protective suit, the huge protective headgear, the breathing apparatus, the fireproof gloves and so on.
To finish, for a grade A, you need to comment on the effect on the audience: here, it is to make the audience experience the bomb suit through an immersive quality as we experience what it is like to see through the visor and breathe through the filters, making the sheer peril and jeopardy of the situation credible.

  2. The Hurt Locker zmovie is likely the film that defines Kathryn Bigelow's style. The opening shot with it's low angle close-up sets the tone for the rest of the movie, she's going to show you a range of emotions mixed with the stark backdrop of war torn Iraq. I can't give this film all five stars because several times in the movie the director allows the on-screen action to overpower the dialog. Overall it's a good drama with a legitimate plot. Bigelow is a talented director and the actors do fairly good job of conveying the rush of emotions of combat in a foreign land. Everybody wants to go home except the lead character Will, played by Jeremy Renner. Renner's character seems to be addicted to the excitement. Although Will is skillful he is seen as reckless by Sgt. Sanborn, played by Anthony Mackie. A great deal of the movie watch swiss army man online free addresses the tension between these two characters. Hurt Locker is worth seeing but it didn't live up to it's reputation.
